Indistinguishable From Magic

would you still lose money and creative if you went to Image or Dark Horse, if they agreed to publish it? Or even if you went to Marvel and released your Dresden Codak on Icon?

The short answer is yes. The historical strength of publishing companies is that they can get your work to people, but with the internet you can do that yourself, essentially for free. What that leaves publishers is the ability to physically print your books, which creators can also handle themselves at a much lower cost, meaning per-book profits are higher when you self-publish.

Indie-friendly publishers like Dark Horse and Oni know this when approaching web creators and generally have to offer more in various ways to essentially win them over, and it doesn’t always work. Others like DC have try things like Zuda which (in my opinion) didn’t understand how web creators became successful in the first place.  I’m not saying that large publishers don’t offer anything to web creators, only that in most cases, the benefits are small and don’t outweigh what you give up.
