Indistinguishable From Magic

How did you build the foundation for your art? Is it just from years of drawing and painting or did you take a more technical approach and learn from the ground up with anatomy books and other reference material? I want to focus on what will give me the best results but I'm torn between sitting down and just drawing whatever comes out, or taking the less interesting route and going through gesture drawings and basic form and anatomy.

The answer is that the two approaches you’ve listed are actually two parts of the same thing.  You have to do both: draw everything every day and also study the mechanics and employ serious technical thought to what you’re doing.  If you neglect either, you won’t really progress in any meaningful way.
