Indistinguishable From Magic

A friend and I recently launched our first webcomic; is there any "gee I wish someone had told me this when I first started" advice you can offer?

1) Quality over quantity - Machinelike regularity is a trait of the newspaper tradition. Be consistent in your workflow, but with webcomics it’s more important to have something that stands out rather than something that updates super frequently. When a new person is going through your archives, they’re not going to think “I like this comic because they update three times a week instead of two,” they’re going to say “I like this comic because it’s good!”

2) Art first, then business - Never make creative decisions based on what you think will sell, and never start any webcomic with the intent of making money.  Merchandising, advertising and the like will rise naturally when and if your audience is large enough.

3) Have fun! - Make sure it’s something you care about!  People can smell insincerity a mile away.  Never, ever make a creative decision based around what you think an audience will like, make something you like. A genuine product that’s rougher around the edges is always better than a polished but calculated product.
